A Note About the Nest Thermostat
While the Nest Thermostat is a marvel of modern technology, its automated adjustments can sometimes be less than ideal in a setting like ours, where we welcome guests with diverse preferences. Previous guests may also make adjustments that can carry over unintentionally. To ensure your comfort, we’ve provided some detailed information below. Thank you for helping us make your stay as enjoyable as possible!
Understanding the Nest Thermostat in Our Historic Home
Important: The Nest thermostat reads temperatures from different sensors at different times of the day. If/when you adjust the temperature, please be aware of which zone it will actually adjust. You are still in control of the temp, but need to be aware of which sensor its reading to actually feel the adjustment.
-- Morning (7 AM–11 AM): Reads from Living Room
This ensures the lower level is comfortable for morning activities, as most guests start their day here.
-- Midday (11 AM–4 PM): Reads from Living Room
Keeps the main level pleasant during the day while guests relax or dine.
-- Evening (4 PM–9 PM): Reads from Master Bedroom
Focus shifts to the upper level. During the day as it reads from the lower level, the upper level will have become much warmer. In preparation for sleeping, switching
to this sensor will allow it to cool down, and consider the guests comfortable sleeping temp. To help offset personal preferences, we've provided space heaters for
your comfort on the lower level.
-- Night (9 PM–7 AM): Reads from Master Bedroom
Ensures the sleeping area is cozy overnight, though cooler sensor readings can make other areas warmer.
Why this setup?
Our home is on the historic registry, and its structure and system layout makes it less energy-efficient than modern homes. We've attempted to optimize the system for comfort in areas where guests typically spend their time during different parts of the day, but are open to suggestions if you feel like it doesn't work the way we intend.
Need to adjust for specific activities?
If you’d like the thermostat to read from a different sensor to better suit your activity:
Use the thermostat’s touch display.
Go to Settings > Sensors, and select the sensor you’d like to prioritize.
Please note: This change will automatically reset at the next scheduled time period.
Last resort
As a last resort we can make sure to manually reset any scheduling or learning the Nest is trying to do. Use caution oin this step as it will adjust zone schedules and may inadvertently disrupt comfort settings.
